Washing Makeup Brushes - 3 Tips
How often do you wash your makeup brushes?
If you are noticing all your colors looking a little muddy or your face is starting to have breakouts when you didn't used to have them, it might be time to look at your makeup tools....your brushes are a good place to start! You want to create a habit of cleaning your brushes to avoid bacteria buildup which can lead to breakouts and muddy color application.
Tip #1. Wash Your Brushes Often
If you are noticing your eye shadow colors aren't as bright and defined as they used to be, it might be time to give your brushes a good cleaning. How often you clean them depends on the products you are using. I like to spray and wipe them off with each use and then schedule time for a deep cleaning every other weekend. It’s also my time to remind myself to also use my spa products like my moisturizing Golden Radiance Mask. I usually put on a podcast or watch a video while I'm washing my brushes too. Washing your brushes helps to keep the colors form muddling together and helps them blend more easily. When you mix any two opposite colors on the color wheel you get brown so unless you only want to be wearing brown....wash them.
1. Use a gentle cleanser - you don't want to damage or dry out the bristles. If you are using SeneGence long-lasting makeup products on your face then the SeneGence Brush Cleaner is the best option. It is gentle enough for your brushes while releasing the waterproof bond so you can thoroughly clean your brushes.
2. Swirl the bristles in a mixture of 1 part cleanser to 3 parts water. (be careful not to get the handle wet since the bristles are glued to the handle and frequent soaking may cause the glue to break down). You can do this in your hands or with a rubber cleaner pad or in a small jar.
3. Rinse well and gently squeeze out water while reshaping your brush bristles. Hang dry with bristles down.
Tip #2 How to Dry Your Brushes
A few things to remember when drying your makeup brushes. First, the Ferrule, (the part that joins the bristles to the handle) also uses glue so make sure you are not getting it too wet or the glue will break down faster and you may lose more bristles.
Allow your brushes to air dry laying flat either off the edge of a counter or dangling from a brush dryer which is my favorite, with the bristles pointing down. Never allow your brushes to to dry with the bristles up and the handle down as this allows too much water to drip into the Ferrule.
Tip #3 Beauty Blender Sponges
Beauty Blender sponges are Microbial-resistant sponges that are meant to be reused and can be for about 3 -4 months if proper cleaning is done. Sponges can be a great way to apply foundation. Clean your sponges every week because they can fill with bacteria and dead skin. To properly use a makeup sponge, you should wet the sponge first. Hold it under warm running water and squeeze then release to fill the sponge up. It will puff up in size about double but don't use it full of water - make sure you squeeze out the excess water first. You can find many "sponge holders" that allow the sponge to air dry in between uses.
